MOVIE: Sometimes tears, sometimes laughter and sometimes both at the same time ... thatƵs the feelings my sister and I expressed when we recently watched the movie ƵLilo and StitchƵ at the cinema in the Huntington Mall at Barboursville. We would definitely recommend it to all ages Ƶ a very cute movie.
CONCERT: The iHeart Summer Concert Series begins its weekly live music event Thursday, June 5, at Pullman Square. The free event, conducted from 6 to 9 p.m., continues each Thursday through June 26 and July 10 to Aug. 28. This weekƵs band is City Heat. Food and drinks may be purchased.
NEWBORN: Keenan and Karison Meredith are new parents of a daughter, Evan Kate Meredith, born April 17. She weighed 7 pounds and measured 19.5 inches long. Berlin and Kathy Meredith of Kenova United Methodist Church are proud grandparents. May this little princess add joy, happiness and love to the families.

RECIPIENTS: Three Lawrence County, Ohio, graduating seniors were recently awarded scholarships by Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. Bindi Staley of South Point High School received a $2,500 scholarship, while Isabella James of Fairland High School and Annika McCown of Ironton High School were recipients of $1,000 each. WRITERS: The West Virginia Young Writers Contest, hosted by Central West Virginia Writing Project, West Virginia Department of Education, University of Charleston and Marshall University June Harless Center, was conducted in early May at University of Charleston. Students in grades 1-12 submitted entries in fiction, nonfiction, narrative, memoir or essay. First-place winners in each county advanced to state level. Among the 2025 state winners were: grades 1-2. taught by Rhonda Dement: Genevieve Fleming, Village of Barboursville Elementary School, ƵSparkleƵs Adventure,Ƶ third place; and grades 3-4 with Jackie McCann, teacher: Amelia Adkins of Harts PK-8 School, Lincoln County, ƵBeach Days,Ƶ second place. County-level winners were awarded a medal and certificate for being first-place winners in local county. Congratulations to these young writers.
MUSICAL: ƵFootloose: The Musical,Ƶ directed by Helen Freeman, continues Friday-Sunday, June 6-8, at Alchemy TheatreƵs Geneva Kent Center for the Arts, 68 Holley Ave. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Additional performances are available Friday-Sunday, June 13-15. Tickets are $20.
CHOSEN: The home of Jan Wolfe, located at 2020 Shawnee Trail, Ironton, was selected as the Yard of the Month for May. It was chosen because it illustrates how the long-range planting of trees, shrubs and perennials of various colors, heights and textures create a breath-taking yard with no annuals required. Potted items and yellow annuals also were added. The selection was made by Ironton in Bloom.
NAMED: Simon Ballengee, Silas Beam, Shawn Betts, David Bradshaw, Allison Brewer, Jennifer Brock and Daniel Brown are among the 107 students named to the deanƵs list for the spring semester at Mountwest Community and Technical College. To earn this distinction, full-time students must be in good academic standing and completing 12 or more credit hours with a minimum 3.3 to 3.74 term grade point average. Congratulations on receiving this honor.
AWARDED: The United Hero Award goes to ... Dr. Myron Lewis, family practice physician at Huntington Internal Medicine Group (HIMG). The award, presented by United Healthcare, honors doctors achieving target scores in the categories of getting needed care, care coordination and doctor-patient conversations, as part of the patient experience survey. Dr. Lewis, an HIMG physician 28 years, graduated summa cum laude from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, in 1990 and earned a medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1994. He completed his residency program at Kanawha Valley Family Practice, where he was nominated as family medicine resident of the year. He is also certified by American Academy of Family Practice. Congratulations to this humble, confident, compassionate and knowledgeable physician.
