SUPER SATURDAY: The 25th annual Super Saturday, hosted by United Way of the River Cities, returns to Marshall Health Network Arena this weekend. The free event, offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 1, features educational activities, information handouts from at least 33 agencies and door prizes. Sponsored by Cabell County Schools, healthy snacks are provided by Wellpoint. REMEMBERING: Princess Curtis remembers the joy, love and happiness her daughter, Melissa, shared in the lives of many. Melissa would have celebrated her 45th birthday Feb. 21. She shares these thoughts: ƵThere is no amount of time nor space between us, that can erase the memories of someone who brought such immeasurable joy into our lives. To this day, I thank God for allowing us the privilege of having had you in our lives. Another birthday without you, but we celebrate in our hearts a life lived so well.Ƶ Precious memories indeed.
FAIR: Marshall University Office of Career Education hosts the annual Career Expo from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Marshall University Recreation Center, corner of 5th Avenue and 20th Street. The expo, open to all majors, features employers in education, engineering, health care, business, law enforcement, media, manufacturing and graduate education and others.
SYMPATHY: Words of sorrow are extended to the Reed Edward Napier family as he passed away in early February at age 76. The Salt Rock resident was husband to Lucy Hall Napier for 55 years and dad to Melissa Ann Lee, Eddie Napier and William Eugene Butcher. He also was a granddad to seven and great-granddad to three. I remember Reed and his family from the 1970s or 1980s when they attended Roach Baptist Church. May Lucy and the family find comfort in GodƵs love and leadership during this time of grief.
EXHIBIT: ƵDark Water,Ƶ an exhibit featuring several of Amelia Winger-BearskinƵs films and time-based explorations, continue through Thursday, Feb. 27, at Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery. Her work reflects on how we perceibve the sky through technology and cultural systems.
SINGERS: The Singers of Distinction Youth Choir of First Baptist Church of Burlington, Ohio, organized in 1972 by Sister Nora June Carter, wife of the churchƵs former pastor, the late Dr. Douglas C. Carter, celebrated its 53rd anniversary Feb. 23. Barbara Linthicum, director, has served for the past 38 years.
MEETING: Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District conducts its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Ritter Park Room with a View Facility, 1570 McCoy Road. Officers include Kathy McKenna, executive director; Alan Morrison, president; Bill W. Sanders, vice president; David Dillon, treasurer. CHUCKLE: A collector of rare books ran into an acquaintance who told him he had just thrown away an old Bible he found in a dusty, old box. He happened to mention that Guten-somebody-or-other had printed it. ƵNot Gutenberg?Ƶ gasped the collector. ƵYes, that was it!Ƶ the acquaintance answered. ƵYou idiot! YouƵve thrown away one of the first books ever printed. A copy recently sold at an auction for half a million dollars!Ƶ ƵOh, I donƵt think this book would have been worth anything close to that much,Ƶ replied the man. ƵIt was scribbled all over in the margins by some guy named Martin Luther.Ƶ
