HUNTINGTON òòò½ÊÓƵ” The Better Business Bureau is offering a free community Shred & E-cycle Event on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Marshall University parking lot at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Hal Greer Boulevard.
According to a release, the event is intended to promote identity theft awareness and fraud protection by providing free, on-site document shredding and e-cycling services.
Identity theft scams reported to BBB last year show that $111,108,966.89 was lost, with another $1,022,912,769.93 attempted, the release states. Identity theft may take a long time to detect, allowing scammers to inflict substantial damage on assets, credit and reputation before the victim is able to notice any issues.
Proactively shredding personal documents and properly disposing of electronics are some of the best ways to protect against fraud and identity theft, the BBB states. Businesses and individuals can participate in this community event by bringing documents with personal and financial information to shred, and outdated, unused electronics to properly e-cycle.
KnightHorst will be providing the document shredding services and Taylor Iron and Metal will be providing the e-cycling services.
The following items will not be accepted at this event:
Batteries: NICD, alkaline, lithium ion, zinc air, nickel metal hydride, lithium sulfur, flow and button cells
Box television sets
Any monitors containing mercury (typically manufactured pre-1991)
Lead acid batteries will be accepted. Flat screen TVs will also be accepted, but there is a limit of two TVs per customer, the release states.
There is no charge for this event; however, monetary donations to the BBB Charitable and Educational Fund, Inc. are welcomed.
This event is sponsored by Huntington Federal Savings Bank.
