Juneteenth Historical Document

A view of a section of the 1865 Juneteenth General Order No. 3 that is displayed by the Dallas Historical Society at the Fair Park Hall of State in Dallas, Friday, June 6, 2025.

It was 160 years ago that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they had been freed Ƶ after the Civil War's end and two years after President Abraham LincolnƵs Emancipation Proclamation.

The resulting holiday Ƶ its name combining ƵJuneƵ and ƵnineteenthƵ Ƶ has only grown in one-and-a-half centuries. In 2021, President Joe Biden designated it a federal holiday Ƶ expanding its recognition beyond Black America.
